Adil, Agriculture Minister renew commitment to food security

By Louis Loku

Central Equatoria State Governor, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, and the National Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Clement Juma, have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening agricultural development and enhancing food security across South Sudan.

The renewed commitment was made during a courtesy meeting held in Juba at the Governor’s Office, following the successful conclusion of the South Sudan Agriculture Conference last month.

The discussions focused on practical measures to implement the conference resolutions and advance the country’s agricultural transformation agenda.

During the meeting, the two leaders emphasised the need to support farmers through policies and initiatives that encourage a transition from traditional subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.

They noted that increased agricultural productivity would not only improve food security but also stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities.

Governor Adil and Minister Juma further highlighted the importance of attracting private sector investment into the agricultural sector.

They stressed that increased investment, coupled with the adoption of climate-smart farming technologies, is essential for boosting local food production and reducing dependence on imported food commodities.

Security was also identified as a critical factor in achieving sustainable agricultural development. The leaders expressed concern over the challenges faced by farmers in accessing their farmlands, particularly in rural areas affected by insecurity.

To address these issues, they agreed on the need for stronger collaboration with security institutions and other government stakeholders through a series of multi-sectoral engagements.

According to the leaders, creating a safe and stable environment for farming communities remains vital for expanding agricultural activities and ensuring that farmers can cultivate their land without fear or disruption.

The meeting concluded with a joint appeal to citizens across the country to actively engage in agriculture.

They described farming as a powerful tool for combating food insecurity, diversifying the economy, and creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

Both leaders reaffirmed their determination to work together in implementing the resolutions of the South Sudan Agriculture Conference and expressed optimism that sustained investment and coordinated efforts in the sector will contribute significantly to the country’s long-term development, food self-sufficiency, and economic resilience.
